Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury is an injury to the brain caused by an outside force (e.g., fall hitting the head, automobile accident, etc.).

The effects and impairments seen following a traumatic brain injury depend upon which area(s) of the brain was injured during the accident. Most often, disruption or change in brain function can be seen in the following domains:

Attention skills
Judgment and problem solving skills
Inferencing skills
Memory and/or short-term recall
Language (comprehension or production) – language impairment is called Aphasia
Speech clarity
